The best way to help people understand what you do for a living

Has your grandma ever questioned why you just sit at home with your face in a computer all day?

Has your eight-year-old nephew ever wondered why you couldn’t just “call in sick” to get a day off of work to hang out?

Have you ever witnessed your parents trying to explain to friends and family members what you do for a living — fumbling and shrugging their shoulders?

What do you say in those situations? When you’re a slasher, an entrepreneur, a freelance writer, or otherwise non-traditionally self-employed, you’re bound to run into people who don’t understand your lifestyle. Brazen Careerist is all about people like us blazing new trails in the workforce, and I’ve learned a TON from their blog, Brazen Life, about forging my own weird path.

Last week, Brazen published my advice for helping people understand these non-traditional career paths. And, guess what? It was also picked up by Business Insider, Yahoo!, and Huffington Post. Feels good to be accepted :)

Go to Brazen Life to read my tips for telling people what you do for a living – Add some comments to let them know you were there, and peruse the site to find more great career advice and discover other cool bloggers and entrepreneurs who are sharing this weird journey!

If you’re new to DIY Writing, here’s a great place to get started. You can also subscribe to updates or sign up for access to the free resources, tips, and tools in the DIY Writing Toolkit.

  1. Well of course it was picked up by those big websites, dear-y! You’re brilliant! And I’m sure your grandma tells you that, even though you sit in front of the computer too much and it’s going to make you go blind one day (to quote my grandma). :)
